Part of the reason for the success of the human species is that we’re designed for survival. In pre-civilization days we held a healthy fear of our environment. This fear made us alert to potential predators, gave us an automatic reaction (the fight or flight response) to danger, and ultimately allowed our genes to be passed on and continually improved.
Though many former environmental dangers no longer exist, this inherent nervousness remains part of our basic design. Many people are able to keep this reaction under conscious control, but for a significant few its impact can negatively impact their quality of life, making even routine activities a waking nightmare.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the irrational presence of fear, often leading to unpleasant psychological symptoms such as being overwhelmed, unable to cope or general unease. Physical symptoms include palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness and more. Tensions occur between sufferers and non-sufferers as each group may find it impossible to understand the feelings of the other.
What Causes Anxiety?
Anxiety may be caused by a physical stimulus such as having to meet strangers or speak at a meeting, or may occur for no discernible reason.
A panic attack is an acute, intense, physical manifestation of anxiety. Panic attacks often occur without warning and typically last in the order of minutes, though they can range from a few seconds to several hours.
Panic Attack Symptoms
The most common panic attack symptoms include irregular, rapid or pounding heartbeat (palpitations), sweating, trembling, hot or cold flushes, shortness of breath, a choking sensation, chest pain or tightness, nausea, dizziness, feeling faint, numbness, pins and needles etc. The unpleasant symptoms often cause alarm, particularly in new sufferers, thus intensifying the anxiety and creating a vicious circle.
