    Dr Freedman here examines the life of Jesus and what we can learn about his mission by looking at parallels, connections and shadowing from the time of the Old Testament. For instance, Isaac carrying the wood for his own death on the pyre and Jesus carrying his cross to his crucifixion; a decree for all boy children to be put to death finds Moses saved in the bull-rushes and a similar decree finds Jesus taken to Egypt for safety. Moses fasted 40 days and nights, as did Jesus. Many incidents in the lives of Adam, Noah, David, Joseph, Isaac, Elijah and others are born out in the New Testament. (more…)

    The World Rainforest Fund, a nonprofit group founded in 1984, is dedicated to preserving biodiversity and saving rainforests worldwide, primarily tropical rainforests in Latin America. The group’s focus is on the Brazilian Amazon, the largest intact rainforest on Earth. The fund helps indigenous people save their rainforest homes; gives grants to nonprofit groups carrying out projects of special value to conserve rainforests; and educates the US public on the importance of preserving rainforests. David Seaborg, founder and president of the World Rainforest Fund, is an evolutionary biologist and a long-time environmental activist.   • Bhagavad Gita for Global Peace and Harmony

    Introduction

    Bhagavad Gita is rightly called the scripture of mankind since whatever it teaches has universal appeal. Bhagavad Gita guides, encourages, protects, elevates, cautions but does not order you to do this and that. The person who studies Bhagavad Gita is drawn to act righteously but not driven to do so. At the end of the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna to reflect on what has been told to him and act as he likes.  There is a choice to act and yet there is no compulsion to act on what has been taught. Bhagavad Gita gives a free will to man to act on its teachings as per his own understanding. That is why Bhagavad Gita is called man’s best friend. Friends never order you to do something. They only suggest or give their opinions when asked. All cultures of the world are based on some philosophy of life. Indian culture is based on spiritual philosophy. As there is no better book on spiritually than Bhagavad Gita, Indian culture is deeply influenced by Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad Gita underscores that there is unity amongst all living beings as God resides in all. The essence of man’s nature or our core nature or SUBHAVA is divine which is same in all. Difference between one man and the other is only due to our acquired nature or Samskaras which are different in each person. As our core nature is same in all, India stands for unity in diversity which paves the way for global peace and harmony. (more…)

    Now I do understand it. I will tell you what it is: Does this path have a heart?  All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. They are paths going through the bush, or into the bush. In my own life I could say I have traveled long, long paths, but I am not anywhere.  My benefactor’s question has meaning now.  Does this path have a heart?  If it does, this path is good; if it doesn’t, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn’t. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life.     Human nature dictates that we are embedded in a society that will always recommend personal growth within the means of the consensus views of that dominant culture.

    We all experience it in the every day yet most of time we do not live our lives from an authentic point or position simply because of the conditioning put upon us since birth.

    As children we learn the right behaviours to get our needs met and this learned trait is continued in social groups, our workplaces, our homes, our family gatherings, in fact all of our self expression is often a reaction rather than a pure unbiased point of attention to the needs of any situation.

    If we could all respond authentically the world would be a lot more different.

  • Living on a Dollar a Day

    More than a billion people around the world, one-seventh of the Earth’s population, are believed to live on a dollar a day or less. This staggering fact is hard to fathom for many living in affluent countries – yet it is an inescapable reality for many millions living in the developing countries of the world. The lack of awareness about global inequality, and the lack of serious efforts to remedy it, inspired the non-profit organization The Forgotten International to send a photojournalist around the world to document the lives of some of the planet’s poorest. The outcome of this journey is captured in the book Living on a Dollar a Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor. Attorney, child advocate, and Professor of Law, Thomas Nazario is the author of this book and the founder and president of The Forgotten International. The compelling photographs featured in Living on a Dollar a Day were shot by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Renée C.Byer.

    Interview with Charlie Mayhew by Jason Francis

    The Tusk Trust is a nongovernmental organization formed in Britain in 1990 that promotes and finances grassroots conservation programs throughout Africa. Tusk Trust has started and funded numerous conservation, community development and environmental education programs on the continent. Charlie Mayhew is the group’s Chief Executive. In 2005 he was awarded the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II. Jason Francis interviewed Charlie Mayhew for Share International.

  • Unfolding Into Activism

    I was brought up in a home with responsible, dedicated parents who showed how much they cared for us four children in many ways every day. I was taught basically “to do onto others as you would have them do onto you,” which meant to be kind, considerate, honest, and generally “go with the flow” and “don’t rock the boat.” But, as I grew from childhood into my young adult years, it became more and more difficult for me to just flow along, only seeing the good in others and in situations, for I didn’t just see the wonderful and the good (of which there was much in my world), but I also saw much that was not good and was, in fact, horrible. I increasingly realized that the boat of the status quo was very rocky for most of my Apache friends, who weren’t able to go with the flow of the dominant culture that forced a reality of poverty, racism, poor health, and marginalization for them and their tribe.   • Edgar Cayce’s Angel

    Edgar Cayce, the Edgar Cayce who was destined to become America’s legendary mystic, began attending Sunday School classes at age ten. The lesson on his first day was the story of creation, from the book of Genesis. Edgar was mesmerized. He received a gift of his own personal Bible and a life-long love of, and expertise in, the contents of the scriptures commenced. Edgar vowed to read the entire Bible at least once each year for the rest of his life, a promise he faithfully kept. Ten readings in arrears, Edgar was fourteen years old when he completed his fourteenth reading. He started teaching adult Bible classes while still a teenager. (more…)
