Is Top Down Management New Age Management?

Management is not just for organizations or something we experience at work. Every one of us uses basic management principles all day long in all our relationships. What is your management style? How well does it work? Management style is very important to each of us, and a shift in management style is one of the most important fundamentals of the dawning new age. Good management, new age management, makes the difference between a lot of unhappiness, obstacles, and stress, and a lot of happiness, peace, and success, not only in organizations, but in the life of every one of us.

As the New Age dawns, will management change? Especially organizational management (so called “human resources”). This sector of management concerns how people are treated. Since studies show that the 2nd leading cause of stress (after loss of a spouse) is how one is treated by one’s immediate supervisor, and the New Age is supposed to be stress free – something has to give – change, shift. The pre-New Age or old style of management is termed Theory X. The New Age style of Management is called Theory Y, following Dr. Douglas McGregor’s introduction of these terms and their theory in his classic 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise

The contrasting or juxtaposed Theory X and Theory Y management systems have received a great deal of attention in management circles and academia since McGregor introduced them. Every informed management professor in the world knows about these, and this theory is the foundation of most if not all organizational management academic courses in America.

Theory X – often termed “top down,” “command and control,” and “authoritarian”

Theory Y – often termed “bottom up,” and “egalitarian”

The following addresses the question: Why does Theory X Management work sometimes? which is answered: “Is it really working in the big picture?”

* * * *

I do not associate Theory Y with fewer rules or less compliance or strong central leadership at all. Y and X are not polar opposites. I see Theory Y as far stronger, the stronger of the 2. Theory X is based on weakness – inner weakness. It is kali yug leadership. It will appear on the surface to be stronger. Usually in doing wrong things like the Chinese CCP and their attempt to take over a large portion of the world, including our country, using financial and economic methods (any careful look at the properties and businesses Chinese owns in the US will make this clear). It is so much that Iowa has passed laws prohibiting more Chinese purchases of larger properties and companies.

When employees are treated as emotional, psychological and spiritual equals, and feedback is routinely solicited (Theory Y), employees and middle managers are more likely to follow rules, because they have more trust, respect, and loyalty to leadership. The closer to Theory Y, the more rules can exist and the stronger they can be, because there is TRUST.

For Trust, a very good book is The Speed of Trust, by Stephen E. R. Covey, the son of Steven Covey, who wrote 7 Habits of Successful people. Its 2 basic points: Trust is based on only two key factors:

1. Competence
2. Integrity

One will be trusted to the extent one has both those qualities.

I know there are examples of companies that use Theory Y and have been successful, and defended by management experts. I don’t buy it, because they are full of people who are fine with being treated poorly and feel OK in a dysfunctional organization.

Organizations do NOT exist just to make money. That attitude is the problem (that profit organizations exist only to make money). They ALSO exist to do it in a way that is evolutionary and strengthening, not just ‘having a job’ and waiting for the next instruction and paycheck. That is success in kali yuga, but not in truth, and not in the new age that is dawning now, which is why Next Gen, to a great extent, does not want to work for large companies. They are keenly sensitive to Theory X authoritarian leadership, and don’t like it. They don’t want to work for anyone. So they work for themselves, or with one or a few other people.

Whenever Theory Y is applied, about 1/3 of the people leave, because they are not psychologically and emotionally ready – both upper staff and rank and file.

Just as AI is shifting the whole scientific and tech paradigm before our eyes, the whole organizational management paradigm is shifting before our eyes.

The Theory X and China’s CCP style etc is how things have been, have been, have been. For millennia. It is not what is to be. For millennia. The New Age, the Age of Aquarius, Heaven on Earth, is coming in. Heaven on Earth means no significant problems for anyone anywhere.
4 major new Age steps or stages on our planet so far:

1. The ancient Bronze Age Harappa Civilization (Indus Valley Civilization – 3,400 BC – 1,800 BC) appears to have free of significant violence and problems for several thousand years
2. Alice Bailey (1880-1949) –  the 2nd to use the term New Age, and the 1st to use it widely, prominently and memorably.
3. The Cultural Revolution of 1965-75 – the New Age announced itself widely to world culture
4. 2025 – the New Age started to directly unfold, as Maharishi forecast (along with over 50 other intuitives, in the Heaven on Earth on my website.

Anything Theory X can do, Theory Y can do better, IF Theory Y is done well. It takes higher emotional intelligence, maturity and competence.

It takes less inner psychological and emotional strength (subservience) to work for and be part of a Theory X organization.

The CCP is also NOT China, not all there is to China. A large % of Chinese do not like that political party one bit. 25 years ago, there were 800 protests in a single year, which were kept out of the US papers. not likely they are any fewer now. The main related differences between China and the US are a) The Chinese have used vastly less military violence than the US outside their borders, instead using economic war more than military war (for the most part), and b) the Chinese rulers are not as secret as those who rule the US.

So the problem is not ‘China’ per se, but the CCP, just as the US problem is not America per se, not the people of America, but the several hundred people managing the US and its closer allies.

However, it is true in one sense that Theory X can be better sometimes – because we are not fully transitioned yet to the Age of Enlightenment. There are stages into the New Age. We cannot jump from X to Y suddenly (in theory we could, but it would be too traumatic and destructive). So theory X has its place, we have to put up with it. Gradually, or less gradually, or not so gradually, Theory Y will continue to replace Theory X. Next Gen is replacing it right now. But that does not require praising Theory X and saying it is ‘needed.’ We need to leave it, not need it.
