Hearing the Voice Within

Learning to hear one's inner guide (or little voice within) isn't so much acquiring a new skill as rediscovering a very old one.

As Spiritual beings we are naturally intuitive, naturally perceptive of those signals coming from the non-physical realms. But both as individuals, and as a species, the ability has been neglected, devalued, even ridiculed.

We live in the age of technology and information, hi-tech is king - or so we're told! But if that's so, how come there's so much mental health problems? - stress, depression, anxiety and the like cause misery to countless many; and how come there's more and more interest in so-called new age topics?

Well, hi-tech definitely isn't king. Sure we're swamped with information, but the result is more overload than empowerment. First step to hearing the voice within is to adopt a healthy skepticism toward the pressures of technology. Leave your cell phone in the closet. Push the off button on your computer, TV, DVD, games console, PDA etc etc.

You are a Spiritual being, let yourself simply be without the seemingly incessant demands of modern life. Take time each day to relax. Just do nothing. You might want to close your eyes, practice deep breathing, maybe run through some relaxation/meditation routine in your mind. Whatever works for you. The goal is to slow down and hopefully stop the endless stream of garbage thoughts that pollute your mind and effectively block the little voice within.

Take the time and make the effort also to break out of the habit of automatism, ie doing everything on auto-pilot, being so focused on meeting an objective that you become totally oblivious to the process. Try to consciously notice your surroundings, what the weather's like, the little details like the color of the sky, the sounds of birds etc.

It takes effort and it takes discipline to do this daily or preferably several times a day. And the pressures of modern life will nag and make you feel guilty that you're being lazy etc. You'll have to resist them.

But if you do, you will begin to open yourself to your inner guide. You'll notice some thoughts coming to you on a different vibration to the usual stream of daily garbage. And you'll also observe the universe giving you some subtle but significant signs. It's always done this, but you haven't always been aware enough to take notice.

Start also to take an interest in your dreams. As you start to tame the meaningless nonsense that fills your brain so your dreams should become clearer and more significant. Get into the habit of jotting them down as soon as you awake. At first just a few words is sufficient, the more you get into the habit the easier it becomes. Of course they will reflect the concerns of your daily life, just like your waking thoughts, but you should also notice that dreams can give clues of what's to come - maybe as dramatic as dreaming of someone before you meet them. They can also serve as an excellent guide, though one that can speak in a strange tongue.
