Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal

Just when you thought reality TV couldn't sink any lower, so comes along a truly excellent series. Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal features psychic medium Chip Coffey and Columbia University clinical psychologist Associate Professor Lisa Miller.

The series features young people with psychic powers who are struggling to come to terms with their "gift". In many cases these youngsters are unsure of the reality of their experiences, or feel threatened by the Spirits that draw close. Their confusion and fears are worsened by their reluctance to share their experiences with their peers for fear of ridicule. In some cases, their "abilities" even cause tension with their parents.

We all born with psychic potential, but sadly this tends to diminish over time due to society's material pressures. Just as some are born gifted in math, music, sport etc, so some are born with particularly heightened psychic awareness. Unfortunately this is not generally recognized as such a gift.

It seems those born with psychic gifts in a generally skeptical world may progress in two ways. They might come to terms with their gifts and channel them positively. However, trapped in a non-understanding environment, their gift could so easily develop into a mental disorder and result in a life of unfulfilled potential.

Coffey & Miller introduce a group of (usually three) kids to each other by taking them to a neutral location that is reputedly a center of psychic activity. While Miller counsels the parents, Coffey works with the kids, exploring the venue and encouraging them to share what they are picking up. More often than not, the kids' impressions coincide with the location's history and previous reports of paranormal experiences. This serves as validation to the kids that they are picking up something real and not going crazy.

For me, the take-aways of the series are 1) psychic ability is a gift, just as much as ballet, microbiology or any other that's commonly acknowledged, and 2) society ought to provide much more support to help those gifted in this direction so they in turn may use that gift to give something back, ie providing evidence of a greater non-physical reality that encompasses all we perceive and much more.

This support could come from established psychics and the Spiritualist community, and could itself be bolstered by a more open-minded approach to the non-material realm from society as a whole.

May Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal serve to widen knowledge of the reality of Spirit and emphasize awareness of the need for acceptance and nurturing of the gifted.
